Kennel Club Good Citizen Classes

The Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme is open to everyone whether your dog is registered with the kennel club or not. The scheme is well structured and teaches you how to be a responsible owner and your responsibilities towards your dog, as well as teaching you the day-to-day exercises that will enable you to live with your dog in a more harmonious way.

There are 3 levels and you will be required to be assessed and pass each level in order to progress to the next. Even if you do not want to take the award you will find the exercises very useful in helping you have better control over your dog.

Bronze Award

The bronze award, is the first award in which you will be required to walk your dog on a loose lead amongst people and other dogs, carry out a basic recall, tell your dog to stay in one position for 1 minute whilst you walk away. You will also need to show that you can groom your dog whilst your dog remain relaxed and much more.

Silver Award

The silver award is the next progression where you will be required to control your dog in and out of a vehicle, come away from distraction, carry out a controlled greeting, teach your dog to be examined by a stranger whilst remaining relaxed, plus a lot more.

Gold Award

The gold award is the highest level of achievement of the scheme. It builds upon the shill learnt in the silver Award and develops more advanced training skills of dog and owner. It also builds in new concepts like being able to send you dog to its bed, get you dog to lie down from a distance (emergency down) and to stay in one spot whilst the owner goes out of sight.

Throughout the scheme you will be taught and given guidance on general dog care

• Responsible dog ownership

When you and your dog are ready you will be assessed and if you pass you will received a certificate of achievement at each level.
