Behavioural dog trainer. Founder of Dog Intuition. Over 40 years’ experience helping owners build calmer, happier relationships with their dogs.
I’ve worked with dogs all my life - from obedience trials and behavioural training through to some of the most specialist detection dog work in the world.
Professional experience
I’ve spent my life helping pet owners solve behaviour challenges while also developing specialist expertise in working dogs at the highest level.
Alongside practical training, I have advised government bodies including the Department for Transport on improving working dog training systems and delivered specialist workshops including Dealing with Dangerous Dogs for professional audiences.
I was asked by Medical Detection Dogs to train the UK’s first nut allergy detection dog (a miniature poodle called Nano). Nano successfully qualified and now works with his owner, helping protect her from potentially life-threatening allergic reactions.
Today, I bring all of this experience - from family pets to specialist detection dogs - into every class and one-to-one session I run.
MINE DETECTION DOGS
In 1999, I had the unique opportunity to take my training overseas and became the first civilian in the UK to train and work dogs for humanitarian landmine detection in Somalia, initially for the UN and later for a Danish de-mining organisation. During this time, I led a team responsible for six working dogs and two handlers.
EXPLOSIVE DETECTION DOGS
One of my specialist areas became explosive vapour detection dogs - highly skilled dogs trained to detect explosives in airfreight cargo. In 2007, I was asked to train three dogs from scratch and achieve UK Government accreditation within just three months. All three qualified successfully. I have since gone on to train more explosive vapour detection dogs than anyone else in the country and managed operational teams of handlers and dogs. Many of these dogs came from rescue backgrounds with significant behavioural challenges, proving that the right training can unlock extraordinary potential.
SEARCH AND RESCUE DOGS
Over the years, I have trained and handled explosive detection dogs, drug detection dogs, arson detection dogs and urban search and rescue dogs, working across the UK and internationally. This has included training projects in Malaysia, operational work at major venues, and delivering training programmes and seminars for professional handlers and instructors.
